Movie: Spiderman : Far From Home

The friendly neighbourhood spidey is back but this time is on a trip, far from home. This movie is so amazing. It is a visual treat. Tom Holland has grown as my favourite spidey and does a remarkable job once again. Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio is a stunner. The idea of introducing elementals in the form of illusion is a brilliant idea. This takes the movie up then homecoming. The action choreography, VFX, story-telling, character arcs everything is grander and majestic. Kudos to the direction, cinematography and screenplay. My personal favourite is the 1st mysterio illusion which comes in mid movie, that was executed brilliantly. The supporting cast does a good job.

With the release of this movie, it concludes phase 3 and the Infinity Saga. This movie also sets up phase 4 in an amazing way. Looking forward to more announcements from San Diego Comic Con on 21st July 2019.

Does it miss Agent J?

Movie: MIB: International

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjani

Directed by: F Gary Gray

Well the idea of bringing in Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson and rekindling their marvel magic does seem to be a good thought on papers but the movie fails to elevate it further.

The movie goes at single pace, no major tonal shifts until the suspense unfolds at the end.

The villains are mediocre. The threat never makes the existence of bureau worthwhile.

Kumail Nanjiani as the voice over for Pawny does add on to the comic relief.

Chris and Tessa have great chemistry. There is something which still makes the movie feel incomplete. Less aliens and threat maybe!!!

Arjun Reddy in Hindi

Movie: Kabir Singh

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani

Yes, Kabir Singh is misogynist, its troubled, there is substance abuse, smoking and alcoholism, but it does show human emotions galore. Movies are based on what some people are going through at some corner of the world. There are sections which are relatable. You can’t sympathize even if you want to because you know the character is doomed. Shahid Kapoor, WOW he has shouldered the film completely. His acting is definitely what makes this film a notch up. It has some beautiful songs which will be on charts for a good time.

This is a scene by scene transition of the Telegu version Arjun Reddy starring Vijay Deverakonda, which was a blockbuster itself.

I’d say this movie does indirectly come with an age appropriation due to the sensitivity, relatability and understanding of the topic i.e 25-35 would be an ideal age group.

Fox’s Mutant Unleash try??

Movie: X-Men : Dark Phoenix

Dark Phoenix is the 2nd iteration of Jean Grey going full power under the fox banner previously cited in x-men last stand.  The movie is a dramatic and emotional take on one of x-men’s most powerful mutants, Jean Grey. They had so much source material to do with the phoenix storyline from comics. I like those small details which they did before the movie name showed up, there was a fire in the studios banner on X, FOX. Also, the O in DARK PHOENIX looked like a lightened bird.

The movie starts up in 1975, with a 8yr old jean grey and how the story unfolds thereafter.

The first act is good with the space mission, a rescue mission from the solar flare and also Jean Grey coming in contact with the phoenix force and absorbing it. X-men is all about using your abilities and work as a team. There is a lot to tell if I go character by character as we have many, but unfortunately not all of them get a good screen time. I loved the third act, on train with D’Bari aliens fighting x-men and presumably brother of mutants under Magneto from Genosha tag team and go all blazing with their skills. Sophie turner looks good and her face acting and hand movements set up with the characters mutant abilities. The rest of the cast do well, Jennifer Lawrence is good as well, but we don’t get to see much of mystique, now that’s something Simon Kinberg had to intervene from a direction perspective. Cinematography and screenplay are good like the rest of series specially the initial movies. Alexandra Shipp as Storm had good moments but there is so much that can be brought onto screen with that powerset, hope MCU does justice to that character in maybe one of the Black Panther movies. Dazzler, a disco singer, mutant also makes an appearance, but that cameo is just restricted to that without exploring the characters true potential. If MCU ever taps into genre blending like how FOX studios used to do then Dazzler definitely makes for a good musical.

All in all the movie is good, less on action compared to days of future past (so many mutants to watch, loved it) and apocalypse.

Evolution of Monsterverse?

Movie: Godzilla, King Of The Monsters

Starring: Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Brown,

Directed by: Michael Dougherty

If you are a pokemon or monsters’ fan, this movie gives all the poke battle and grandeur of monsters.

The historical references of how the titans and humans co-existed, the presence of Titans replenishing earth of what humans have done in a monologue by Farmiga really catches on to the possibility of what if this could be true.

The movie starts of with a San Fransico sequence where Godzilla attacks and how a family loses their son and drifts apart post the aftermath and the world still dealing with it. Monarch which is an organization who’s supposed to sustain these monsters have their bases across the globe.

The story dives backs to ancient myths and beliefs o f Kaiju’s.

Mothra (Queen of Monsters) (Flying)- Yunnan, China

Ghidorah(Monster Zero) (Electric/Flying) – Antarctica

Rodan (Fire/Flying)– Isla De Mara

There were other monsters too like giant arachnid, a bulky MUTO and trunk-less mammoth but the details weren’t prevalent.

Mothra vs Rodan= Mothra

Godzilla vs Ghidorah= Godzilla

The ORCA, a device used to control the frequency, could control the monsters.  The cast is diverse and is filmed at multiple locations. Every monster location sequence is beautiful cinematically.The cinematography and screenplay is good. Direction by Michael Dougherty spans well.

There are strong women protagonists in the form of Vera Farmiga as Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison Russell played by Millie Brown. ZIyi Zhang’s twin character could have been discovered more as they did touch down to her family history of having twin girls and being the third gen monarch. Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe are all good in their own. The discovery of an under ground city during end section adds in more flavour to the amazing locations this movie or further movies under the monsterverse could take place in. Godzilla emerging as the true king of monsters in the end and the rest of the monsters acknowledging. Ghidorah was over powered but was spun out as an alien species who did not belong to earth’s natural order. It does set a good leap for Godzilla vs Kong

Movie: Student of the Year 2

Starring : Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, Ananya Pandey, Aditya Seal

Directed by : Punit Malhotra

The movie is dull. Tara Sutaria and Ananya Pandey try to spark it out but the entire movie is lousy. Aditya Seal as Manav is good, should have got more screen time. Rest of the movie just plays out without engaging. The first instalment clearly had a better cast and peppy songs. The only song I liked was hook up song which was shot for promotions with Alia Bhatt. There were rumours of Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra doing a cameo but that seemed to be a hoax. When the movie ends, there is nothing memorable to take along.

Tiger Shroff is on his usual routine, it was flying jatt attends college.

All in all watch SOTY1 and recomfort yourself.
