Evolution of Monsterverse?

“Only way to heal is to create peace with the demons who created them.”

Movie: Godzilla, King Of The Monsters

Starring: Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Brown,

Directed by: Michael Dougherty

If you are a pokemon or monsters’ fan, this movie gives all the poke battle and grandeur of monsters.

The historical references of how the titans and humans co-existed, the presence of Titans replenishing earth of what humans have done in a monologue by Farmiga really catches on to the possibility of what if this could be true.

The movie starts of with a San Fransico sequence where Godzilla attacks and how a family loses their son and drifts apart post the aftermath and the world still dealing with it. Monarch which is an organization who’s supposed to sustain these monsters have their bases across the globe.

The story dives backs to ancient myths and beliefs o f Kaiju’s.

Listing few of my favourite sequences and existing locations with monster type.

Mothra (Queen of Monsters) (Flying)- Yunnan, China

Ghidorah(Monster Zero) (Electric/Flying) – Antarctica

Rodan (Fire/Flying)– Isla De Mara

There were other monsters too like giant arachnid, a bulky MUTO and trunk-less mammoth but the details weren’t prevalent.

Battles:

Godzilla vs Ghidorah= Ghidorah

Ghidorah vs Rodan= Ghidorah

Mothra vs Rodan= Mothra

Godzilla vs Ghidorah= Godzilla

The ORCA, a device used to control the frequency, could control the monsters.  The cast is diverse and is filmed at multiple locations. Every monster location sequence is beautiful cinematically. The cinematography and screenplay is good. Direction by Michael Dougherty spans well.

There are strong women protagonists in the form of Vera Farmiga as Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison Russell played by Millie Brown. ZIyi Zhang’s twin character could have been discovered more as they did touch down to her family history of having twin girls and being the third gen monarch. Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe are all good in their own. The discovery of an under ground city during end section adds in more flavour to the amazing locations this movie or further movies under the monsterverse could take place in. Godzilla emerging as the true king of monsters in the end and the rest of the monsters acknowledging. Ghidorah was over powered but was spun out as an alien species who did not belong to earth’s natural order. It does set a good leap for Godzilla vs Kong

Genie does grant Disney’s live action wish !!!

Movie: Aladdin

Starrung: Mena Massoud, Will Smith, Naomi Scott

Directed by: Guy Richie

“There is not enough money and power in the world to make anyone happy”.

“Steal an apple and you’re a thief, steal a kingdom and you’re a statesman”.

“People don’t see you when your royalty”.

The trailers just don’t justify this movie.

Well honestly, I’m not a fan of musicals but this one I really loved. This was such a down the memory lane movie specially for 90’s kids. Well we all knew the story line as most of us grew up watching Disney tales. Turning it into live action which Disney is going to be doing with most of their animations post the success of Beauty and the Beast and the upcoming Lion King makes it pretty interesting.

I was hooked onto it right from the start when Will Smith (Mariner) tells the story to his kids and with the Arabian Nights song and the camera panning through Agrabah, the city’s landscape to the palace with Sultan, Jasmine and Rajah. Director Guy Richie is good with his action sequences. The Aladdin introduction and the whole chase action musical sequence, one jump ahead was choreographed fabulously. It also reminded me of the Aladdin Gameplay, with the guards trying to capture him. Mena Massoud is charming as Aladdin, perfectly casted, captures the charm and the wit of Aladdin effortlessly and has a great smile looks good and is surprisingly a great dancer too. He looked very one note and wooden in the trailers though. His interactions with Jasmine and his sea view house makes for a good view. A whole new world is also a good musical number. The screenplay, cinematography and direction is woven and knitted well. The cave of wonders looks great and is creepier than the animated one. Will Smith as Genie is sassy and zany, loved his version of the Genie, he seemed so happy just to be this bundle of joy with his musical numbers, prince Ali and the instruction manual musical, Friend like me in the cave of wonders. Naomi Scott looked gorgeous as Jasmine, plays her part well speechless was so melodious and she did have a good character arc, I was rooting for Priyanka Chopra though when Disney was looking out for castings. Marwan Kenzari as Jafar plays the baddie and has done a pretty good job with his sorcerer snake sceptre. The movie has some interesting lines and I loved most of its musical numbers. Michael Wilkinson costume designs are pretty accurate. It was reminiscent of Bollywood.  Abu, Carpet , Yago, Rajah, Genie all are CGI’d amazingly. Nasim Pedrad and Navid Negahban add good support. Loved the ending. I saw it in 3D but even a good screen should do the job. I thought there were lot of places where things could pop up but there wasn’t much of a 3D aspect to what was filmed. Arabian Nights…..(singing)

The Infinity Saga

Whatever It takes, we are in the Endgame now

Movie: Avengers Endgame

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Bradley Cooper, Josh Brolin

Directed By: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo

Wow what a movie, I gasped, I cried, I smiled.. this movie is indeed the best in cinematic history of comic books. What an ending to 10 marvellous years!!! Epic !!
There is so much to talk I can barely write it down. I’d actually like to talk to people on this one. Brilliantly written and executed.

This movie had it all Bingo!!! This is going to be so spoiler filled because the entire movie is a spoiler. There are many amazing elements. The way they connected all the movies with time travel is just amazing. I’m just going to run out of adjectives. Coming to characters, what a character arc most of them got specially cap and tony. The acting was superb across board. Tony wielding the gauntlet and saving everyone to cap being worthy of Mjolnir such amazing comic book moments. Cap retiring in the end. The Nebula plot fetched in Thanos back to the ultimate finale battle. This was so amazing.

Black widow literally stole my heart with her performance and Scar Jo was brilliant.

The movie checks in so many comic book plots. Tony took the epic cap death but got his due credit as it all started with Iron Man in 2008. He literally shouldered the MCU. Cap handing shield over to Falcon. The A force, all women team glimpse was such a tease. All the armies coming together Valkyries, sorcerers, asgardians, wakanda, etc and all the avengers , wow what a moment. Also to get those amazing cameos from so many characters across movies was just brilliant, it really shows what an amazing connect they all have with the MCU. There are so many things happening in the movie, it definitely adds to the rewatchability factor. The infinity saga is a must watch and highly recommended. The Russo brothers have pulled yet another juggernaut.

LOVE YOU MCU. What a fan service movie

Thankyou Kevin Feige for bringing this event on the big screen.

Stan Lee you will be missed.

My fav, will miss Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man. Love you 3000

How big of a Kalank is this on the Dharma Resume???

“Jab kisi aur ki barbadi apni jeet jaisi lage, to hamse zada barbad aur koi nahi is duniya mein.”

“Kuch rishte karz ki tarha hote hain, unhe nibhana nahi chukana padta hai”

Movie: Kalank

Starring: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt.

Directed by: Abhishek Varman

This pre-independence period drama needs patience to sail through its runtime. The movie isn’t bad but its just out of the league of the current cinema goers. This movie would have done wonders had it been released in the 90’s or early 2000 period. This revenge saga revolves around Zafar and Roop played by Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The acting is good across board. Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt have done a good job. Varun and Alia did justice to whatever was provided.

What fails here is the script and the release time. This belongs to a different time period.

There are couple of good songs. The movie has too many sub plots but doesn’t find enough time to explore all of them. Wish the ending was different, but the Hindu Muslim riot plot just makes it a weepy ending. Coming to what’s good, there are some stunning visuals and breath-taking backdrops.

As mentioned earlier the acting is good. What stands out are the dialogues penned by Hussain Dalal, there are plenty of amazing dialogues. There are plenty of secondary characters which are known actors.  Screenplay and cinematography are decent. This could have been a magnum opus but just misses out on the spark but does manage to cross the 100cr mark but with Avengers Endgame scheduled to release today, its going to halt the run.

Are pets friendly enough???

Movie: Pet Sematary

Starring: Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, John Lithgow

Directed by: Kevin Kolsch, Dennis Widmyer

Stephen Kings latest adaptation Pet Sematary is just a ok horror watch. It has some moments but the writing seemed sloppy, they could have done a lot more with this one. As I haven’t read the book, can’t say if it’s a complete adaptation or if the script was moulded by the writers. The cast has done a good job, it has some intimidating scenes. The trailer showed certain elements which could play up a major factor but were just bogged down to mere glimpses in the feature. Zombie pets could have been an interesting take on it but the movie sticks to minimalist ideas and keeps it the usual. Jason Clarke and Jete Laurence as Louis and Ellie Creed had good moments and  could show their range as actors specially Jete Laurence who had some sort of character arc.

Stephen Kings movie adaptations have been a miss or hit. So it all boils down to the perception of the director and the writers how to add in the x-factor.

Are the Kids safe?

Movie: The Curse Of The Weeping Women – La Llorona

Starring: Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velasquez

Directed By: Michael Chaves

If you love jump scares, this movie does it all right. With the content they had they could have made it terrifying but the movie does serve the appetite for the genre. Coming from a Mexican fable, it offers a live action horror flick after last year’s Coco representing Hispanic audience. You do feel sad for the antagonist but then its true evil form is treacherous. It has predictable yet WTF just happened moments scaring the audience.  The eerie background score also adds up to the scare factor. Mikki Daughtry who penned this one along with Tobias Iaconis, has another release (Five Feet Apart) which also happened to release during the same time, does have a variety to offer in genre horror and drama with quick releases.
Coming back to the movie, the real gems are the child actors who are fabulous. Linda Cardellini shoulders the movie along with the little pillars and they together were a petrified bunch but brave indeed. Spoiler alert I may say, this movie is tied up with the Conjuring universe, whether its going to be a direct entry or a spinoff, only time will tell. As per the Conjuring timeline, the spin offs are offspringed post their appearance in the main conjuring movies. James Wan is truly developing a universe of his own with the release of this movie(CU-Conjuring Universe). Wan was overseeing this project directed by debutant director Michael Chaves who is also slated to direct Conjuring 3.
I had my scare moments, opinions may vary, as they say “It’s a folktale…to some.”

How far would you go for a revenge?

Movie : Badla

Starring : Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu, Amrita Singh

Directed by : Sujoy Ghosh

A thriller with a twist in the tale. A plot twist nobody would have anticipated. With more and more Bollywood movies focusing on scripts and just not mere star power. This movie’s true star is the script. Coming together after PINK, the dynamic duo of Amitabh Bachchan and Tapsee Pannu recreate similar magic in this revenge saga. It goes through multiple tales only to unfold the truth. Director Sujoy Ghosh is mastering the thriller genre post successes of filsm like Kahaani and Kahaani 2. At one point you may figure out the culprit, but how the film establishes it is the real treat. The film is full or twist and turns penned again by Sujoy Ghosh thus the screenplay and direction are in sync throughout. Both the leads have commanded the film with a good assist from Amrita Singh who’s on the silver screen after a year’s gap. Tony Luke from the Malayalam film fraternity is good in his Hindi debut. Manav Kaul is used minuscule in the file. Movie is a major hit as it was made in a very small budget but went on to cross 100 cr mark. Well that’s what good scripts can do these days if they are properly established for cinema goers.

The most powerful avenger?

Movie: Captain Marvel

Starring: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelson, Jude Law, Anette Bening, Clark Gregg, Gemma Chan, Lashana Lynch

“i’m not gonna fight your war.. , i’m gonna end it..

Directed by:Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck

Its a review and appreciation post. congratulations on crossing 1B worldwide. Its coming in a little late, but here we are. Its a well strategized release for a film with a women as lead as it opened on International Women’s Day.

The trailers don’t do much justice..the movie is quite good.. Brie Larson and Samuel chemistry is lotta fun.. the 90’s references do add up to the mix with the space elements.. An origin story which uses the typical marvel formula in a different style with memory flash backs…

21 Vs 10000 is it the number or the heart to withstand a situation?

Movie: Kesari

Starring: Akshay Kumar , Parineeti Chopra
Directed by :Anurag Singh

Kesari, the deep saffron colour is associated with sacrifice, religious abstinence, quest for light and salvation. The film is a historic tale of bravery and valour of 21 soldiers of the Sikh Regiment of the British Army. Based on true events make it so painful to watch how people dealt those situations. It also preaches a good notion on humanity even on a battle ground. Bringing religion to evoke hatred and fuel war is wrong calling it gods words penned in one of its dialogues, which unfortunately even happens today.

The movie had short songs which was good keeping the context of the genre. had they even cut down on couple of more would have not affected the storyline. The cinematography was spectacular capturing scenic shots of the valleys in the first half. The movie never rushes to conclude and steadily progresses to the battle of Saragarhi fought in 1897 between the British colonial army and native Afghans is a chronicle, magnificently brought to the silver screen. The second half is soulful with good action sequences and has some spine-chilling moments. Akshay Kumar headlines the cast with impeccable screen presence as always. Parineeti Chopra plays deceased wife of Kumar’s character which the movie side-lines as subplot completely. The movie leaves you with a sense of pride and patriotism. Respect and salute to all those who gave their life.
